{"id":3041,"date":"2025-04-17T16:51:22","date_gmt":"2025-04-17T06:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vuepilot.com\/support\/?post_type=article&#038;p=3041"},"modified":"2025-04-17T16:51:22","modified_gmt":"2025-04-17T06:51:22","slug":"why-dashboards-logout","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/www.vuepilot.com\/support\/article\/why-dashboards-logout\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Do My Dashboards \/ Websites Log Out After a Period of Time?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p3\">If you\u2019re experiencing your dashboards or websites logging out after a certain period of time while being displayed in VuePilot, it\u2019s important to understand how authentication works between your dashboards and the services they come from.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Authentication Sessions Are Managed by the Dashboard Service, not VuePilot<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">When you log in to a dashboard or website (such as Power BI, Grafana, Tableau, etc.), your authenticated session is established directly between <span class=\"s2\"><b>your machine and the service provider<\/b><\/span> (i.e., Microsoft, Grafana server, etc.). These sessions are managed by the service\u2019s own security and timeout policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">VuePilot does not create or manage these sessions, nor do we have any control over how long they remain active.<\/span><\/strong><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>VuePilot Uses Chromium\u2014Just Like a Regular Browser<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">VuePilot uses a Chromium-based browser engine to display your dashboards and websites. This means it behaves the same way as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Any session timeouts or automatic logouts that occur are due to the <span class=\"s2\"><b>rules defined by the website or dashboard service itself<\/b><\/span>, not VuePilot.\u00a0 The session token provided by the service you are logging into will come with a fixed expiration time.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Session Timeouts Are a Normal Part of Web Security<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\">It\u2019s completely normal for websites and dashboards to automatically log users out after a period of time. This is a standard web security practice designed to prevent unauthorized access in case a session is left unattended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">There is <span class=\"s2\"><b>no universal or fixed time<\/b><\/span> that a session will stay active for. Different services apply different session policies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\">Some platforms, like <span class=\"s1\"><b>Facebook<\/b><\/span> or <span class=\"s1\"><b>LinkedIn<\/b><\/span>, may keep you logged in for weeks or months at a time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\">Others, particularly internal business tools or dashboards like <span class=\"s1\"><b>Power BI<\/b><\/span> or <span class=\"s1\"><b>Grafana<\/b><\/span>, may use more conservative policies\u2014logging users out after <span class=\"s1\"><b>30 minutes, 1 hour<\/b><\/span>, or <span class=\"s1\"><b>12 hours<\/b><\/span> of inactivity or total session time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\">These behaviours are entirely determined by the vendor or system administrator of the dashboard software you are using.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">If you\u2019d like to change how long your dashboards remain logged in, you\u2019ll need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Contact the vendor<\/b><\/span> of the software you\u2019re using<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Or <\/span><b>speak with your internal IT department or system administrator<\/b><span class=\"s1\"> if the dashboards are managed in-house.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\">They can advise whether it\u2019s possible to adjust session timeout durations or implement persistent login options.<\/p>\n<h2>Logging Into Your Dashboard Using VuePilot<\/h2>\n<p>You can login to your websites or dashboards using VuePilot by following the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuepilot.com\/support\/article\/logging-into-websites-that-require-authentication\/\">instructions found here<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Microsoft Power BI Authentication Information<\/h2>\n<p>For more information about Microsoft Power BI specifically with regards to session expiration <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vuepilot.com\/support\/article\/microsoft-power-bi-authentication-information\/\">see this article<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Please Do Not Contact VuePilot Support for Auth Token Configuration<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s3\">As a reminder, <\/span><b>VuePilot does not have any access to or control over your authentication tokens, cookies, or session durations.<\/b><span class=\"s3\"> We are unable to provide support or guidance on modifying these settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">If you require persistent dashboard sessions, we recommend working with your IT team or dashboard vendor to implement a suitable solution.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re experiencing your dashboards or websites logging out after a certain period of time while being displayed in VuePilot, it\u2019s important to understand how authentication works between your dashboards and the services they come from.
